Wallflowers and Butterflies

If you’re anything like me, you have a lot of empty wall space in your child’s room.  This is an easy and quick way to add a personal touch without overdoing it.  Just remember to place them high enough so a small child can’t grab them and tear them down.  I would like to go ahead and point out that I am not a photography master, so please don’t expect any awesome photos of any DIY project I try.  That said, on to the project!

Here’s a list of materials I used:

  • Matte Photo Paper (You could also use scrapbook paper if you have it on hand)
  • Inkjet Printer
  • Scissors
  • Thumb Tacks
  • Washable School Glue ( I used stick glue)
  • Pencil

The first thing you need to do is find a flower and/or butterfly design you like and print it out.  I used these:  Billie Monster, Two Crazy Cupcakes.   Then, of course, cut out your pattern.

Now, if you’re going to use the photo paper like I did, go ahead and find some wallpaper designs and print these out.  Print a different design on the back side as well.  (I imagine you could also use plain paper, but I wanted some durability to mine, hence the photo paper.)  Trace your flower cutouts with pencil, cut them out, then erase any pencil marks made.

Next, take your pencil and roll the flower petals so they curl and show the design on the opposite side of your paper.  You can straighten them out until you’re satisfied with the amount of curl you have.  Do the same thing with the wings on your butterflies.

Finally, you’re ready to start your last step.  Grab a tack and rub it onto your glue stick.  Make sure you get a decent amount.  Press it firmly onto the back of  the flower and let it dry for a few minutes.  (I used two thumb tacks on each butterfly.)

Pick a place on the wall and have at it.  I placed mine around a framed photo to help use up that big ‘ol empty wall.  I may have gone a tad overboard, but my daughter refused to let me mess with them further.

There you go guys.  I hope you enjoyed this post and I look forward to any comments you may have.  There’s more to come, so be sure to check back soon for more crafts and DIY projects!
